Let's face it, our kids grow out of things REALLY fast. Don't you wish they could stay little forever??? Me too. But they have to grow and get bigger. That's just a part of life. And wit a growing violinist, comes bigger violins. We don't want a violin that is too big or too small. We want it juuuust right! So I'm gonna help a sister (or brother!) out!

Lately, I've been getting a lot of questions asking how to know if their child has the right violin size. Many of you think that there are only two sizes. A "toy" size and an adult size. But did you know that there are actually SEVEN violin sizes??? You read that right ladies and gents. They actually have many other customizable sizes too but here are the main sizes available: 1/16, 1/10, 1/8, 1/4 (this one is the "toy" size), 1/2, 3/4, and finally 4/4 (known as "full size" or the adult size!)

It is so important to get the right size of violin for your child because it can be very uncomfortable and eventually can get vey frustrating for the student and they will not be able to practice properly. If you notice that something is off or that their playing is more out of tune than before, it might be because their violin is not the right fit and they may have outgrown it!

If your child's arm is almost straight or pretty much parallel to the violin when they reach for the fingerboard, then the violin is too big for them. You can hold onto it until they grow a little bigger for them to use it again! If you find their arm is bent and they look like a T-Rex, then their violin is too small for them and it is time for a bigger violin!

When it comes time to upgrade the violin to a bigger size, it is time to measure your child's arm! Measure from the neck to the center of your child's palm!

Below you will find a guide that will help determine what size would be best for your child. As always, thanks for reading and you are always more than welcome to come into my studio and I can help get you or your child sized for one! See ya next time!
